The room screamed with a deafening silence as the Doctor sat on the floor holding Romana close to him, she had buried herself against his chest. He could feel her shaking slightly as her body trembled against his, but he could feel that she was starting to relax as he spoke softly to her in their ancient language, before she finally looked up at him, as his soft fingers wiped away her tears He would do everything he could to make sure she knew she was safe.

Nobody spoke for some time. Rory stood some distance away holding Amy both bewildered by the day's events. They had taken Melody, this had all been for nothing, and no apology from the Doctor could change it.

There was just so much buzzing around in the Doctors head right now; Melody was gone, and his companions deep down blaming him.

River Song had not turned up to help, and now it was clear that Romana needed him. Too many people relied on him right now, and he couldn't be there for everyone.

"Romana," he said softly. "There are some people I need to talk to."

But her hands clung to his. He had never seen Romana in this clearly damaged state before, but he did not want to be apart from her, not after been reunited after so long, and he certainly did want to leave her on her own. He stood up, pulling her up with him and took her hand in his.

She wasn't okay; he knew that, but in time he would make sure that she was. He would help her heal; it was all he could do once this nightmare was over. Romana was the only good thing to come out of this.

The young soldier stood there, who looked barely a child herself, far too young to be mixed" up in this.

"They always were," thought the Doctor to himself.

"There is someone here who wanted to talk to you. Her name is Jenny. She came to warn us." said the young soldier nervously as she brushed a strand of her auburn hair behind her ear. She had heard the stories of this great man; he was a hero, but she had heard the other stories, that he had killed all his people. Those were the stories that made her nervous. She thought once that they were just stories, but then she found out they weren't.

She had joined the clerics just so she could meet this warrior. She had been in such awe of him as a little girl, and now he was standing in front of her. She blinked her emerald green eyes to make sure she wasn't dreaming.

"Jenny?" Could it be his daughter? It was impossible, she had died in his arms, He walked towards the girl sitting on the metal curved stairs. He let go of Romana's hand and kneeling down before her, he quickly scanned her with the sonic screwdriver, before running his hands over his face. She was dying, but they was no doubt it was her. He did not know how she survived and was here but yet she was here.

Her eyes suddenly opened as her haunting sapphire eyes that resembled the bottom of the ocean; mysterious, and intriguing stared into his.

"Hello," said the Doctor. "You helped my friends. Thank you."

"Doctor, I met you once. You don't remember."

"Of course I remember. I remember everyone. We ran, didn't we, Jenny, you and me?"

Her eyes closed and her head drooped down as her raven black hair fell over her face.

The Doctor stood up and sighed.

"Who was she?" Romana asked, touching his shoulder gently.

"Someone who was very, very brave."

"They always are," Romana said quietly, wrapping her arms around each other for a long moment before they pulled apart.

"So what next? I assume they took Melody to Earth to raise her in the correct environment?" Romana asked.

"Yes, they did, and it's already too late."

Romana stood there, shocked. "You're giving up? You never do that."

"And don't you wish I did."

"If you gave up on finding the only other Time Lord left, you would never have found me. Don't you dare talk about giving up!" She gave him a look that was so typical of Romana, that look that made him carry on.

A woman's voice distracted them.

"Well then Soldier. How goes the day?" making both Time Lords spin around on their heels.

"Where the hell have you been? Every time you have asked, I have been there. Where the hell were you today?" He started walking towards her, anger was in his eyes.

"I couldn't have prevented this."

"You could have tried!"

"And so, my love, could you." She turned to Amy. "I know you're not all right , but hang tight because you're going to be."

Romana seemed to wake from her daze. "My love?" She gave the Doctor a questioning look, as both her hearts sank in her chest. He had moved on found someone else. She should have expected he would have, that he wasn't really her Doctor any more.

"No, no,no absolutely not, she is a friend." He took Romana's hand in his. "I meant what I said to you. I love you, Romana, and nothing and no-one can change my mind."

She smiled softly, the first time he had seen her smile since he found her again. "I love you too."

He faced River Song once more. "You think I wanted this? I didn't do this! This ... this wasn't me!"

"This was exactly you! All this, all of it! You make them so afraid. When you began, all those years ago, sailing off to see the universe, did you ever think you'd become this?

The man who can turn an army around at the mention of his name. "Doctor". The word for healer and wise man, throughout the universe. We get that word from you, you know. But if you carry on the way you are… what might that word come to mean? To the people of the Gamma Forests, the word "Doctor" means "mighty warrior". How far you've come. And now they've taken a child. The child of your best friends. And they're going to turn her into a weapon, just to bring you down. And all this, my love… in fear of you."

The Doctor looked at Romana. Did he cause all this is? Was this why they took Romana, and broke her? Was this all his fault?

Suddenly a gun shot was heard from above them. Romana gasped in pain, touching the hole in her chest as the blood seeped out and she collapsed onto the floor. "Doctor," she mumbled.

"No! No,No," said the Doctor, running towards her, before finally reaching her. "Romana, talk to me." He had already lost Jenny again. He would not lose Romana too. He grabbed his sonic screwdriver and frantically started scanning her, knowing she was dying.

He got up."How much do I have to lose!"He was filled with rage, grabbing anything he could and smashing it.

"Why her? Why?" he screamed in a fit of rage. "Just take me!" he shouted. "You have just crossed the line. Nobody messes or hurts the ones I love!" He took a few steady breaths, before walking back towards her.

As he knelt before her, she mumbled, "Doctor," and he helped her sit up, trying to stem the flow of blood, but it was far too deep.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"Don't you give up, Romanadvoratrelundar! Don't you ever give up. I wont let you die." A tear slipped down his face.

He could tell that she was growing weaker. Moments ago she was so alive, back with him where she belonged, and now she was dying. He wondered if she would be strong enough to regenerate.

"And this?" hissed the Doctor as he glared at River Song.

"All of it," she confirmed her earlier statement.

He took Romana's hand. "I can't lose you. I can't," he repeated.

"I am just going to sleep. I will be with you soon," she whispered, closing her eyes.
