THE LAST TIME LORDS OF GALLIFREY

Benny had only been a little girl when she had come across the Daleks on Beta Caprisis. The Daleks had killed her mother. Now they were here again, she couldn't stop shaking, she was terrified. She held onto Brax's hand tightly but he wasn't saying anything, certainly no words of comfort. Brax was worried, which meant they were all done for.

The silence was unbearable. Finally, he spoke.

"Bernice," he said calmly. "It's going to be all right."

Bernice knew better. It wasn't going to be okay, not this time. "They destroyed my life," she uttered the words; she had never ever been able to say before.

Braxiatel looked up at her eyeing her with deep concern. Something told him that something had happened to her when she was a little girl, or maybe even before that. "Tell me," he said softly. He squeezed her hand gently.

Benny shook her head, she couldn't go through those terrible nightmares, or her childhood that seemed to have been snatched from her and made her an orphan. Braxiatel had been the only stable thing in her life, and even that at times didn't feel quite stable, but he was the only one she could depend on.

The Doctor grabbed Romana, dragging her into the collection. "Doctor, you're hurting me!" She screamed, but he just threw her on the ground.

She looked up at him but all she saw was a stranger, certainly not the Time Lord she had once loved.

"Doctor?"

"Shut up," he grabbed her roughly and dragged her though the collection. Suddenly, the floor around them started whizzing and time twisted around them. A chilling sound made them freeze.

"Daleks," Romana whispered, trembling. If the Doctor had paid closer attention he would have seen it was an act, which she was merely playing along, as it she was playing a game and was trapping him.

"Time Lords detected, they will be exterminated."

Breaking free, Romana ran. She knew the Daleks would soon realise she had slipped away. She could hear them rolling down the corridors screeching orders before a blinding light seemed to transfer her to a different part of the collection.

A little girl was running towards her. "Mummy, Mummy," the child cried, throwing her arms around Romana.

And then Brax appeared. He was kissing her, his lips brushing gently against hers the way he once had.

"Brax," she gasped pulling him closer to her. "It's wrong, this is all wrong; we are meant be-"

He didn't let her finish, kissing her again. Romana still had a part of her that loved him, and she didn't want to be without him, but another part of her knew better, and she pulled back.

Romana slapped Braxiatel, hard across the face.

"You selfish pig," she hissed. She still had her memories and her thoughts. She could still fight this whatever that was controlling her. She had to, or she would simply die trying.

"Romana, I can explain." Brax pleaded.

"Yeah, you always could." Romana laughed bitterly.

"Look, it's not even important...This is the wrong reality for a start, and whatever happens doesn't matter."

"Not important?" Romana hissed. "I am not likely to forget any time soon."

"I can make you," Brax gently pulled her into his arms. "I can make you forget everything that happens in this reality."

"No!" Romana pulled away. She looked at him in horror. "I just want the truth, you owe me that much."

"I saw what the fifth Axis did to other world and planets and then to our people time and time again. I won't let it happen again, do you hear me I will not let it happen again! So I made the decision to do something—something I wasn't supposed to do. I took the bio data. Pandora promised to give me what I wanted—a chance to restore Gallifrey. We would both get what we wanted. I knew Gallifrey was doomed, but all that mattered was saving Gallifrey. It's all that mattered."

"Oh Brax, what have you done?" Romana sighed. "You trusted her?"

"I was desperate. I was overcome with grief…you were gone." He looked down, his voice cracking. Part of him still loved her, too.

"It's going be all right," Romana said in a soothing tone. She leaned in to kiss him, her lips barely grazing his jaw.

"Tell me Brax, where is your time equipment?" She whispered against his ear.

Brax looked at her in horror, as she began to kiss his neck. As he suddenly realised she wasn't what she appeared to be.

"Isn't it me you really want, Irving?" she said softly.

"You really are a pathetic little clone, aren't you?" He managed to mumble against her lips. Brax struggled to fight against his desire for her. It wasn't her; she was a perfect clone of Romana, a Dalek clone, which meant Romana was still alive. Or perhaps she was dead.

"Enough," he pushed her away. "We both know you aren't the real Romana."

"You must forgive me." Romana had looked hurt.

"I must forgive you. Oh, yes, I must forgive you," Braxiatel laughed. "Forgive a clone."

It suddenly hit Brax: this was Romana. A Dalek would have no emotions or feelings. She was being controlled by them.

"Irving, help me," she pleaded before falling. He caught her in his arms, holding her gently against him.

"I love you," he whispered softly. He could tell the Dalek mind had weakened her. Something suddenly snapped inside of him. He could not believe what had he been doing these months and years.

"How touching," Pandora stepped out of the shadows. She had a gun pressed against the side of Bernice's head. She was struggling but Pandora was stronger and Bernice would of known it.

"Give me Romana and I will give you dear Professor Summerfield." She smiled sweetly, holding out her hand as if to invite him forward. Braxiatel hesitated. This was his worst nightmare come true. "How important is she to you? Are you willing to let her die?"

He looked down at Romana; she wasn't well, he knew she'd never survive anything Pandora intended to do to her. Benny, on the other hand, was strong; she could take care of herself. Except she was heavily pregnant, for one, and there was a gun to her head. He knew Pandora would kill Benny without a second thought.

"Bernice or Romana," Pandora mocked.
