Disclaimer I don't own Doctor who. I only wish this scene had been in the end of time.

"Where are you going?" Wilfred asked in exasperation.

He looked with worried eyes at the Doctor's bright and eager face. There were far too many complicated thoughts going on inside that brain of his, that was for sure.

Wilfred didn't like it one bit.

"To get my reward" he answered simply, without looking at Wilfred.

They was only one person who he had saved for last.

Just one person he needed or wanted and that person was the Time Lady who captured both his hearts - Romanadvoratrelundar. He had barely felt alive since her loss and now, he could not give up this opportunity. It hurt to much to let it go.

He had lost Koshei forever now and then his mother? No. It was too much. All he could do now was to recapture something, not all, but just a tiny piece of what he had before Gallifrey died.

Wilfred disappeared from his vision and he was transported as if by magic – he was watching them. He couldn't really approach them as he would likely cause a paradox, but still, just to be captured inside this moment once more, even just to see it replayed was enough.

He felt like he was watching a piece of his own life taking place as if it had been captured inside a snow globe.

His 8th self was a little way in front of his vantage point.

The Eighth version of him was lying on the lush red grass, staring up at the stars. They looked so much in love and he remembered that it was one of those moments he knew he'd tell his kids about. He remembered it perfectly and watched on in wonder, envious of his younger self.

Romana was so radiant, so beautiful - it took his breath away and then they kissed, giggling like acolytes at the academy and then flopping back down into the grass and staring back up again.

After a few more minutes of silent star gazing, the Eighth Doctor turned to Romana and whispered his goodbyes before reluctantly walking away.

She sat up and watched him go, remaining until he was out of sight to look up for a little longer, a happy wistful smile on her lips.

He stood watching her, unwilling to tear his eyes from her, knowing that he would not see her for a very long time. Or until his eventual death.

He sighed gently as she stood up, straightening the wrinkled folds in her dress.

He knew he should walk away and not let her see him, but for some reason he couldn't. He was rooted helplessly to the spot. As she approached through the darkness, she narrowed her eyes as if straining to see, before coming to a halt directly in front of him.

She studied him for a moment.

"Doctor" she says softly.

He knew it was breaking every rule he had been furiously taught at the academy, but just to be in this time line was incredible. He could not miss this opportunity.

"You were never one for following rules," she said softly "How long do you have?" she whispered. She had sensed that his body was dying and concern etched its way across her features.

"Not long. Wanted to see you one last time" he managed to get out, disbelieving that he was talking to her.

He knew he could not warn her – she would hate him for that. She respected the rules and her planet enough to want to lead the Time Lords as their president.

He simply leaned forward and met her lips gently, allowing himself to sink forward and feel her body against his.

It was a perfectly bitter-sweet moment and a tear slipped down his cheek.

"I love you" he whispered against her mouth "I just needed to tell you that one last time".
