Beta read by Lady Catkin

The Doctor walked back into the TARDIS, pain and sorrow etched upon his face.

He had just lost another companion, but this time he would never see her again. She was dead and he would never hear her infectious laugh again. It was his fault, he had lost again.

How many lives had he already destroyed and ruined? He dropped his jacket over the console chair, standing there for a moment reflecting on the prophecy he had been given.

"Your song is ending Sir. Oh, but then he will knock four times."

He didn't want to die.

To be honest, death scared him, but maybe it was time. There had been too much loss and pain. A longer life wasn't a better life; he was proof of that. He knew some people lived more in 20 years than others did in 80. That it's not the time that matters, but the person.

He was tired of the endless struggle, watching everything turn to dust. He was tired of being the loser, being the last of his race and knowing that there was little more than loss ahead of him.

He was snapped out of his reverie with a creak from across the room. He looked up, confused for a moment, as the door of the TARDIS slowly opened.

The person that stepped in and closed the door slowly behind them was someone he had thought he would never, ever see again. His mind raced and tried to put pieces together that did not fit in order to create a picture that made sense.

But how could this make sense?

Romana was stood by the entrance, the door now closed behind her, looking at him with a small sad smile on her lips.

"I'm going to die." He managed. "Because there's nothing else I can do. For the first time in my life, nothing."

Suddenly he remembers Rose taking the heart of the TARDIS.

"I bring life."

"Don't be so melodramatic" Romana countered, her face changing to that of concern as she made her way towards the Doctor.

The Doctor glanced over at the console not even paying attention to Romana "Unless... I look into the time vortex itself." He breathed.

"If a Time Lord did, than he'd become a god, a vengeful god."

"I will have to do it" said the Doctor.

He would be the winner; there would be no more goodbyes, no more loss. He could bring back Gallifrey; he could stop the war and wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky.

Romana gasped, realising what he was about to do. Her mind raced, filling with options of stopping him, but she was too late. The Doctor stood there in front of the console and a bright light engulfed him and his eyes went bright green as a piercing light shone out of them. A blinding light engulfed the TARDIS as Romana shielded her eyes, making her fall backwards, for a moment. She watched the Doctor as soon as the light abated slightly. She knew she should stop this but she was rooted to the spot, her hearts pounded. He looked different to how he had moments ago.

She moved a few steps towards the Doctor, but he looked at her like a stranger.

"Get away." He hissed. "Stay away."

His voice was different, it sounded grating and angry and almost... almost evil. She had wanted to find the Doctor for a long time and now he was treating her like a stranger. Had they not been close once, travelling, running from one planet to another, collecting keys for time and running from the black Guardian. Did he not remember this?

But what had she expected? To just reappear in his life and solve all his problems? It was going to take more than their reunion to help him reconcile all the things that had hurt him since they had last met.

The Doctor could see everything now. The raw power of all creation showing him how to alter the whole of history. The Time Lords reborn, standing strong. He would own and rule them, every last one of them and Romana would do exactly what he told her.

He would destroy every last Dalek, Cyberman, Weeping Angel - every single enemy. He would wipe them from history as if they had never existed.

"The laws of time belong to me and me only!" He announced. He could laugh at how Sarah Jane told him that loss and pain define us and how everything had its time but now this was his time, his victory.

He was not just a survivor of the Time War. He was the winner and now he would put everything right, the way it was meant to be with Gallifrey still on the map. With Romana at his side there would be no exiling to E-space, no Time Lords demanding her return. No, her place would be with him on the TARDIS like it was meant to be.

"Doctor, please," pleaded Romana. Once, a long time ago, he would have listened to the only person who could make him do anything and then act like it was all his idea.

"You don't have to do this! Oh Doctor" she whispered touching his face.

"My Doctor, If I had never left you with all this pain. I wish I had stayed with you, but I had to be my own person. I had to be me". She paused, looking at him, sensing all his pain.

She shook her head sadly, his hearts could hold the empire of the multi-verse within them and he felt the pain and horror of them all entwined together. It was like he had taken on the role of some deity – like everything was down to him to make right and he blamed himself for the things that went wrong.

"I'm here now," she whispered "forever, I won't leave you, just please stop this".

She pressed her lips against his hoping to make him remember. She could not abandon him now or ever again; he needed her.

Within moments she felt him kiss her back.

"Romana," he whispered "I thought you were dead".

"I lived, barely, but I did. Been looking for you for centuries" she said gently, making him see he did not need to do this. The thing he wanted most in the world was right there in front of him.

Romana.
