The Doctor stood, deep in thought at the console, his inner struggles battering in his mind. He only had one word in his head. Romanadvoratrelundar, the Time Lady who had captured both his hearts. Once a year on the anniversary of her death, he allowed himself to grieve for all he had lost. Romana had been his sole reason for carrying on. The Time Lords may have separated them but they could not stop either of them from loving each other. She had been his everything; there could be nobody else after her. She was his equal, his true love.

The rest of the time he tried to live for her. It would have been what she wanted, and to stop the Daleks from destroying other worlds. He was still working on the second promise.

He had arrived too late as always. The Citadel was battered and crumbling around him like the ancient cathedrals on his beloved Earth. The battlefield outside was littered with bodies, weaponry flaming machinery and smoke. The sight was pure Hell. He knew in essence, it had been his fault for not ridding Gallifrey of this filth. He had such a wonderful plan. He would take Romana with him and they would be together at last, maybe Leela and Brax too if they were still alive. They had to be alive he could not think like that. He had heard Romana was no longer President; that the high council had gone over her head and raised up Rassilon, him over her. The Time Lords saviour as he was known as. The whole thing was unbelievable, they had just signed their own death warrant.

He had already started murdering his own people, anyone who stood against him. The Doctor had heard that Rassilon had signed a termination order on Romana. He could not let that happen. Not her, not his beautiful Romana. Sometimes he would dream that the stars would spell out her name glittering in the night sky.

He heard muffled voices in the distance. The Academy looked terrible. The windows had been smashed, leaving littered glass glistening on the blood-stained ground and the front doors had been ripped off their hinges. The Doctor hurried into the building, briefly noticing the broken rubble of the walls as he ran. He had always been a fast runner, everything just blurred together as he sped down to the stairs towards the room. Everything was dark inside the class room when he arrived and there was his brother Braxiatel holding Romana in his arms. She had been injured already and badly by the looks of it.

Brax was cradling her dying body in his arms. Their people had torn her apart. That was before the Daleks had destroyed her, his own people had simply handed their former President to them and then their lasers went straight through her as her piercing screams was heard through the capital.

"Romana," he whispered kneeling on the floor. There was blood. Lots and lots of crimson blood staining Braxiatel hands and his clothes as he had tried to stem the bleeding and save his former President. But she had been crushed without pity. She was too weak.

"Leela?" he asked suspecting the answer would be too terrible to hear.

"Leela and Narvin were both murdered. Narvin died trying to rescue Romana from her cell," he explained looking down at Romana in his arms. "We did not find Leela's body but the story was she had been reduced to carbon."

Romana slightly frowned. "Braxiatel, Doctor," she managed to say through the pain "I know I am dying,it's okay. Only you two can stop this you can't let them win," she tried sit up but she had little strength as she drifted in and out of consciousness, but she didn't cry. They knew she must have been in terrible pain and even at the end she was the strong Time Lady they knew.

"Doctor," whispered Romana as a tear slipped down her cheek. "I'm sorry. Doctor, you have to promise me you will stop them destroying another world. Promise me you won't die here." The final words she had managed to say had caused her pain, as she simply gasped between each word.

"Regeneration?" he asked Braxiatel.

"She can't, she's too weak to survive it." He replied with teary eyes. The Doctor had known deep down she was far too weak to survive a regeneration, he could feel her hearts slowing down as he pressed a tender kiss on her lips.

"I love you," he said feeling his hearts breaking into a million pieces as she closed her eyes. She was gone.

"Romana," Braxiatel let out a loud sob clutching her lifeless body as the Doctor looked on.

He had always hated his own kind but this was so abhorrent to what the Time Lords stood for. After millions of years, this is what his kind had turned into,Vicious monsters, there was no other word for it.

The Doctor blinked back the tears. I will never forget you Romana,he thought sadly. He could still hear the screams in his head of his people time locked in Gallifrey forever. He could still feel Romana; still feel her presence which lingered in his TARDIS more strongly on the anniversary of her death, as if she was watching over him, even now. He hoped she would be proud of him.
