Chapter 1

The air was cold without emotion; she broke the calm with the exhale of oxygen that was within her lungs. As she walked she cast her hazel eyes outward taking in the war zone that was New York City.

The shattered glass and rocks made a slight crunching as she allowed her steel toed boots to cross their path. She turned slightly when she heard an explosion erupt out of a building causing it to fold inward as the glass and bricks splashed on the body covered street.

She was the only one left, to her knowledge. The sun would soon rise and she would be safe, or so she thought. Flashes of the night she spent fighting off the infected people crossed her mind in a hideous delight. Somehow the chemical spill had something to do with this whole thing. It somehow infected the water supply causing the city people to turn into those things. Those demons. They rise to eat the flesh of the living spreading the infection creating more of them.

She wiped the sleep from her eyes; she had to fight it off if she wanted to survive. There was no time for weakness she thought about how she fought like hell against those things almost slipping into death’s boney fingers.

Her name was Vikki Nadiline, born in the slums of New York City. Vikki knew the importance of only having herself. Seeing that her birthday had just recently pasted she was now the age of nineteen. A few days ago the only thing she had to worry about was getting to work on time but now the only thing on her mind is the will to survive.

Her right hand was sunk into her short army green skirt pocket. Holding on the glittering steel magnum revolver. She looked around for those things. She heard a strange sound of rumbling trash and played it off as the wind. It once again drew her attention. She changed her direction to confront whatever it was. Her heart pounded harder and harder as she drew closer. Hands shaking and mind dazed she reached the cause of the noise.

She gazed in a dark horror as she watched two of those things feeding on the bloody flesh of a woman. One turned to meet her gaze causing her to stumble backwards for a moment. This thing appeared to be a gothic dressed in black with chains spiked hair and pale skin. He stood and was fairly tall. She brought the handle of the magnum revolver outward but quickly placed it back in her pocket.

There were only two and she could handle them with hand to hand, she was a kick boxer and was very deadly.

He lunged forward and she side stepped raising her left leg slightly and sent it crashing into his kneecap shattering it like glass. As he fell on one leg she slid her knee under his chin and raised her arms high. With her fingers crossed together she brought them down harshly. His soft head splattered on the street.

The other stood. He was a biker, once again in their savage manner he lunged out. She slammed her right fist into the right side of his ribcage and struck his face with the left fist. He spun around before he crashed to the ground. She stalked over to him, as she now was the hunter. He tried to rise but it wasn’t of any use. She whirled her leg around and raised it high. Her leg was as high as she could get it. She let out a demonic battle cry as she brought it down with great force. The blood sprayed as his head split from the body.

How long could she go on like this? She was by herself and her magnum revolver would only get her so far without bullets. She needed food and a place to rest her aching head. She pushed those weak feelings and emotions out of her head.

She was a fighter and it would take a hell of a lot more to break her spirit.

She withdrew herself from the orange and white Adidas windbreaker she wore and tied it around her waist. Sweat dripped down her back as she pulled the army colored shirt that had “I L.U.V. BAD BOIS.” in black letters. Her long brown hair was in a ponytail at the moment.

It was high after noon when her stomach called to her. The sounds it made as it pleaded for food scared her. She looked around for any source of food she could find. There it was, the “Happy Boy Food store” stood with all the food she could grab. She smashed her boot through the glass door. It was dark and looked safe but she was on high alert. She saw a thick bag and was just what she needed.

She rushed grabbing chips, cookies, candy, and bottled water and other sodas. The bag was extremely heavy but it wasn’t heavier than any other training bag.

She began to indulge in the feeding of the looted food. Her stomach was pleased with the offering. She began walking once again to find a means of communication. As she arrived on Fifth and Melon she heard an intense scream.
