Chapter 2

Her heart began to pound as she thought the worst. She didn’t want to rush over to this person and see them being ripped to shreds.

She couldn’t take it. The thought of knowing she could help this person. She rushed out trying to find the victim at hand. She arrived to see another one of the zombie like creatures trying to squeeze itself into a small space between two buildings. Maybe this person wasn’t hurt, or infected. She ran closer to the creature and screamed out “Hey!” the creature turned his head in time to see Vikki dish out a hard jumping roundhouse kick that made his head do a complete three sixty. He fell over and she outstretched her hand and said, “Its okay you can come out now.”

“Is it safe?” a small voice said.

The victim was a girl Vikki thought. “Yes. It is safe, that thing is dead.”

Vikki said with a small smile on her face. As the young woman squeezed out of the tight space Vikki grabbed her arm and slammed her to the wall. She withdrew the magnum revolver and placed it right on her forehead.

“Were you bitten?”

“No!”

“Were you scratched?”

“No!”

Vikki released the young woman. With a glance she saw that the young woman was Asian. Dressed in all black with a short skirt with fishnet stockiness that led down to her black boots. She had black hair with electric blue highlights. The woman exhaled in relief as she gazed at the woman dressed in army fashion.

“What’s your name?” the young woman said relaxing her neck muscles.

“My name is Victoria, but my friends call me Vikki for short.” Vikki had remembered that she would probably never see her friends again. Her slight smile decreased.

“My name is Candice, Candice lee. I almost forgot to thank you.”

“For what? Oh that was nothing”

“But it was you saved my life.” Candice smiled at Vikki and it made her feel a little uneasy. Vikki glanced at Candice’s gloves. They were black with thick metal spikes. Around her wrist were thick spiked bracelets.

“Are you any good with a weapon?” Vikki said.

“Well my dad was a champion sword fighter I guess I’m handy with a knife, or a sword.” Vikki placed her left arm around her waist and unwrapped the knife belt and handed it to Candice. Candice study the weapon for a moment then unsheathed the razor edge. The blade was about 19 inches that would do a pretty good amount of damage.

“Give me your gloves.” Vikki said with her hand stretched out. Candice slid the gloves off and handed them to Vikki.

“Why do you need them?” Candice asked.

“I’m a kick boxer; with these gloves it’ll make my work a little easier.”

“Are your parents¬?”

“Yes.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“That’s okay.”

“Did you get anything to eat?”

“No.”

Vikki gave her the bag and let her have her pick of food she desired. After replenishing, Candice and Vikki made there way to downtown New York. There was an empty sea of cars and plenty of destruction far as the eye could see.

“So, how old are you?” Vikki said not looking at Candice but casting her view out to alert her of any sign of the creatures.

“I’m fifteen years old.” Candice said. They felt the heat of the flames that engulfed a Ford truck.

“We’ll need a few things if were to…” a creature lunged out on Candice throwing her to the ground. Candice screams as she struggles to wrestle it off.

Vikki drew her left foot back and unleashed her full strength as she booted the creature in the chest. It fell back a yard but soon it raised snarling like a rabid dog. From other side glances they heard the moans of the others cracking their bones as they made their way sluggishly they were surrounded by five of them.

Candice’s face was portrayed in an early day horror film. She began to feel sick with the grotesque odor that the creatures produced.

“Go! Get to safe point and I’ll try to get to then!”

“No!” Candice screamed.

The creature lunged out again and Vikki merged her steel toe into its stomach causing it to stumble backwards. The razor edge whirled throughout the air and was placed in the creature’s skull.

Vikki looked in a state of shock for a moment at the fire that blazed in Candice’s eyes. Candice grabbed the razor edge and ejected it from the corpse.

The blood was a rich plum color, which was caused by the infection she whirled the blade around slinging a good portion of the infected blood to the ground.

A creature grabbed Vikki from behind. She smashed her right fist into his face; taking a hold of his left arm she flipped him to the ground. She lifted her boot over his head and sent it down splattering it all over the street.

She withdrew the magnum revolver and aimed. She saw the two creatures in front of each other and smirked as she pulled the trigger. It sent a wave causing her to stumble backwards. Within the gunfire there was a sort of eerie calm and a feeling of being safe funny to think that she found comfort with this killing tool. The bullet split into their heads and burst out with a splash of blood. As the creatures fell to their deathbed their inner skull and brain were open as if two roses bloomed.

*******

Her heartbeat pounded without stopping. Vikki turned to catch a glimpse of Candice wiping the sweat from her forehead. They had been walking for an hour and needed to rest but couldn’t because the fear of those things lurking around every corner hunted their minds.

“We have to go somewhere where there’s ammo and to rest for a while, maybe the police station?”

“Good idea.”

“I think it’s a few blocks southeast from here I’m not really sure.”

Candice said trying to make light out of the dark situation. They made their way with caution in every step. Vikki wondered how they could get to point “C” if they can’t get past point “B”. The jail would buy them some what of time but not for long.

Candice looked as if her heart were breaking in two from the thought of her mother and father. She was there that night, there to see with her own brown eyes. To witness her mother and father being consumed by the creatures. Forced to put them to rest, killing them a small tear rolled down her cheek and she turned away from Vikki’s sight.

Vikki paused her walking and turned to Candice.

“What’s wrong?” Vikki said but ate her words because she knew the situation.

“Everything!” Candice screamed. Vikki grabbed her shoulder.

“We have to keep moving if we want to survive.”

“Where would we go?”

“I-¬I don’t know okay! I can say that but you can’t just give up. We’re not going to die out here and I don’t want you to say that ever again. Please.

Don’t say those words again. We’re not going to die, we have to stick together. You have to have to will to survive because I can’t want it hard enough for the bought of us.”

“I can’t…”

“You have to start believing that right now! I’m not moving from this spot until you say it to me; tell me that you’re not giving up.”

Vikki’s words were strong and filled with great truth. She wouldn’t let Candice die, she wouldn’t let herself die. She would fight to the end to protect them both.

Vikki placed a small smile on her face and began to walk once more. Her words were strong but she knew Candice’s words were probably true.
