Chapter 3

Two hours later…

The clouds now hide the sun and brought a small cool front of mixed colors of gray. The color gray. Vikki once thought her world was black and white. Once thinking that there was only a thin line between living and dying. It was something dark and dangerous. The dead live and pass the infection of their body to others drawing in more.

The color line was shattered beyond compare. Vikki opened a bottle of fresh spring water and poured it down her throat. Afterward she wiped her mouth and passed it over to Candace and she as well drank the water. They arrived at the police station and were caught off guard by the outward face. The police station windows were busted out and blood stains were every where. As they entered they both knew they were in for something strange.

Candice withdrew her razor edge from the sheath and triggered Vikki to bring forth the magnum revolver. The station was dark and damp; sparks sprayed from the damaged computers as Candice stepped behind the desk and looked at a surviving computer.

“I think I can get it to work, maybe even unlock the weapon room.”

“I’ll try to find it.” Vikki said leaving Candice in the front of station.

Candice hacked throughout the surviving files and clicked on a file named “Reboot Alpha-Omega”. She jumped back almost crashing on the floor from the glass and sparks that erupted from the exploding computer. The sound of machines unlocking filled her ears. The red deem light changed to a green before they blew out. Soon after the cell doors slid open. As Vikki walked down the hallway she froze upon hearing the noise, but then returned to walking.

******

His eyes opened as the cell doors scrapped the ground as they were unnaturally bent. He thought it was nothing more than a dream, a nightmare, and a figment of his imagination. What happened last night couldn’t have taken place. He sat up on his lower bunk of the cell and released a sigh, as it escaped him he stood and walked forward out of the cell. This was his chance to escape from the cops and continue to be on the run, but how far would a convict last out there before he’d be caught again? His orange jumpsuit was only on his waist as the rest of his muscled body was covered by a dirty under shirt. He paused when he heard a sound that was almost a dragging on the floor. He quickly returned to the cell and reached under his pillow for a shank. The shank was badly made as it looked to be stitched together of things found. The shank was short handled with a thick blade. As he walked out of the cell again his short spiked brown hair felt the moist, cold air. The sound of a single drop of water echoed down the hallways of the jail telling him that it wasn’t a dream, what he witness really happened. He saw wild inmates like rabid dogs, bleeding, gushing spitting up blood everywhere his eyes gazed. His dark green eyes took in all of blood stained floors and walls and the smell of dead flesh. He jumped as he heard something rushed past him from behind. He turned slowly to catch the sounds of a limp leg dragging across the bloody floor, almost sliding. He felt a dark sensation override his soul and he couldn’t control it no matter how he tried. He turned back to face his right side and that’s when he cast his gaze on a man with his head lowered. He felt his soul ease as he knew this man, or so he thought.

“Leroy.” his words went unanswered.

He took another step forward and called the silent man’s name once more.

“Leroy.” yet his words struck no movement in the silent man.

“Hey, come on Leroy what’s wrong with you? Why aren’t you answering me?” there was no reply.

“Your starting to scar the hell out of me man, say something.” His words seemed to be in need of an answer. All the silent man produced was a strange whimper in his throat.

Drip, drip, ¬drip, ¬the sound of the single drop of water filled his ears and gave way to terror. His dark green eyes were opened in a fear and lost emotion but yet as his eyes looked brave his soul screamed as he crept to the silent man and suddenly stopped. He began to back away with his mouth gapped with fear as the silent man lifted his head to expose a half eaten bloody face. The silent man stumbled as he reached out to grab the brown haired man. The whimper in his voice was louder and lazier.

“Stay back!” the brown haired man screamed with his hands stretched out to guard himself. Only another grunt escaped the silent man’s gapped mouth. The drool and blood oozed out. The brown haired man’s heartbeat increased as the silent man enclosed him to a wall. The silent man lunged for the brown haired man, but he quickly evaded to the right and viciously stabbed the silent man in the ribcage with the shank. The blood escaped by the paints as it gushed throughout the wounds. The silent man hissed as he tried to bite into the flesh of the brown haired man. The brown haired man rammed the shank into the silent man’s right side of his head. The scream he let out was half fear and half anger. This scream traveled down the hallways and into Candice’s ear. She began to walk down the hallway and in to the cells. The razor edge was still stained with the infected blood upon its metal face.

This was a creepy feeling from head to toe and Candice couldn’t shake the feeling that took over her, causing her hands to shake. She was alone and without Vikki she would be easy prey for whatever lurked in the prison. She licked her chapped lips from the cold air, the sound of a single drop of water entered her ears and it hit her hard as she realized that a jail wasn’t suppose to be this quite.

The infection had spread throughout the jail as well as the outside world. She gasped when her eyes fell upon the bloody floors and walls. Her look was that of horror and questions, questions she dared not to ask. The light gasp turned into a light whimper as she trailed through the bloody floor and cast her gaze to the darken realm before her. Her lips quivered as she took another step forward, looking into the cells as the blood was smeared and stained everywhere. As she was taken by the sight of horror and the stench of the odor the stains produced.

The air brushed her neck as something rushed past her. Her heart was about to burst out of her chest for it could not take the terror of this moment. She threw her body in the direction to the noise only to find nothing awaited her.

She quickly turned her head back to its first position, she was about to explode from the thick tension in the air.

“Hello.” she said in a hollow voice. Only the drop of water answered her.

Drip, ¬drip, drip. A harsh wind blew before her causing her to stumble backwards. The blur that flashed in front of her headed for her without mercy.

In the moment she unleashed a scream, the darkest of screams as this unknown thing dashed to her. This scream traveled throughout the hallways as she hurled the razor edge, but it was to no effect as the blur extended its hand and caught the razor edge blade first. The blur hissed as it was inflicted with a small cut by the blade, this blur became a man, a handsome man with short spiked brown hair but this man didn’t wish to speak of love but to kill. The brown haired man back handed Candice to the wall with a force so great a large grunt of agony escaped her lips. He locked his hand around her small neck squeezing her air pipe almost severing it. She was weak against this man, so weak and was she expected to fight him and his death grip. She felt her heartbeat slow down rapidly with ever passing moment. She grunted once more as her eyes started to weight her down. She had to close them and give them relief, sweet relief. The brown haired man suddenly was thrown to the blood stained floor sliding a foot away to a wall. He held the left side of his ribcage as he gazed at a woman wearing army fashion. Candice slid down the wall to the floor holding her neck trying to relax her neck muscles.

Vikki pointed the magnum revolver at the unknown man without blinking; she was ready to split his skull at a moments notice.

“You okay Candice?” Vikki said while her gaze was still upon the man.

“Who the hell are you?” the man yelled as he stood, still holding his ribcage.

Vikki’s face was cold without emotion as she took a breath. “My name is Vikki.”

“That’s it, no last name?” he said with a small smirk on his face Vikki slowly shook her head as she replied.

“No, not for you.”

The brown haired man took a step forward but quickly retreated to the stained wall as Vikki inched her index finger across the trigger.

“My name is Nathan, ¬Nathan Green.”

Vikki nodded her head once more for a second and placed a gaze over to Candice who regained herself as she stood. The lines of black and white came to her and it reign supreme and it wouldn’t budge. She would have to do something about this man. She couldn’t just leave him here without any means of survival. Damn it! Why did this have to happen?

“Is-¬is that food?” Nathan said as his mouth watered and his gaze was child like. Vikki rolled her eyes as she reached into the sack and threw him a bag of Original Lays chips. Nathan ripped the bag open and attacked without mercy casing Vikki to turn her head at this sight. Within seconds he was finished.

“Do you have anything to drink in that bag of yours?” Nathan said as he licked his fingers free of the crumbs.

“Sure.” Vikki said dull as she threw him a bottle of water. He opened the water and as if he were a vampire he engulfed his victim until there was no more.

She lowered the revolver and saw Nathan fall into an ease, he pushed off the wall and stalked toward Vikki. “Thanks for the grub but if you’ll excuse me I have to be going.” Vikki threw her left arm out catching him as he stalked by.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Vikki said shocked that he’d even consider going out there. Nathan snatched away from her with a small grin. “Oh, you seem to care about me, I’m touched. “What does it look like darling; I’m getting the hell out of here. Now if you’ll excuse me I’ll be on my way.” He started to walk again.

“No…please don’t their out there, those things those zombies!” cried out causing Nathan to turn and gaze at her with a humorous look in his eyes.

“What?” He said folding his arms.

“You heard what she said zombies. There are zombies running around New York City and right about now we’re the only people alive to our knowledge.”

“That’s impossible.”

“No, not any more. I’ve seen more death in the past twenty-four hours than I have in a lifetime and I’m telling you that you will die if you don’t take our help.” Vikki said extending a hand to Nathan. He studied the hand for a moment and then thought about what he had just done to one of his fellow inmates. He extended his hand and intertwined his with hers. “So what’s the game plan?”
