WHO DO YOU TRUST?

This contains spoilers for the conclusion of the episode Horror in the Heights (also knows as The Rakshasa), but the rest, outside of some recapping of earlier action and the bit of dialogue in italics, is my own.
Who Do You Trust?
I switched off my recorder after listening to the playback of what I had just recorded; knowing that even though I could produce evidence of the truth of my recent allegations, I won’t.
He tried to warn me, that dying rakshasa hunter. I was the one who took the crossbow and specially blessed arrows from him; and more than proudly told him that I, Karl Kolchak, would have no problem dispatching the monster. It didn’t matter at all whether the thing appeared to you as the one you most trusted; I was completely safe, as I trusted no one.
Famous last words…
It seems that this ‘no one’ I trusted had a face and a name. I almost died tonight because I was more than reluctant to shoot elderly colleague Emily Cowles through the heart.
Just as I was about to leave the long-abandoned office, the door opened and Emily herself walked in. I gamely tried to smile as she, noticing nothing out of the ordinary, excitedly informed me of her date with her friend Mr. Cartwright.
It was then that I realized I could never let her know what had transpired earlier this evening.
After she departed, I again depressed the record button to add one final statement.
“And if you happen to be walking a lonely country road one night; and you see your favorite aunt coming toward you…good luck to you, too!”
I sat in silence until the ‘clack’ of the automatic stop showed that my tape had run out.
Collecting my recorder and other gear, I switched out the lights and left the office; very sure that I would find it difficult to sleep tonight or look dear Miss Emily in the eyes tomorrow.
