AUTHOR’S NOTE:  A big thanks to my number one fan who pointed out that one of my Heidi stories connected with a story called Hardships and Triumphs, where Rick is taken by the Legion after they return to Cairo in the first movie.  Alex was born while Rick was away, so Evelyn’s Pregnancy with Heidi will be his first, and with that I have more of an angle.  To refresh your memory go to Rick and Evie’s Room and read Hardships and Triumphs.

SUMMARY:  Two years after Ahm Shere, when life is getting to busy for our favorite couple, they decide they need some time away.  A desision is made and all of their lives will change in a matter of nine months.

A Little Souvenir

Epilogue

After Evelyn became Assistant Curator of the British Museum, and Rick started working more and more from his office, things in the O’Connell household began to change.  Both of them were doing so much work, that neither had the time for one another, or for Alex, and that was beginning to affect all of them.  More and more often they would start to argue about silly things, until one day it call come falling apart.

Rick and Evelyn agreed to start coming home earlier, and for him that was easy since he owned the shipping firm he worked for, but for Evelyn, working under someone made coming home not so easy, and that as well as loving being at the museum, made her forgot their little deal.  After a week of her not meeting her half of the bargain, one night when she arrived home they got into a terrible fight.  For the first time ever there was name calling and slamming doors.  It was after that night that they both realized they needed to get away.  So one morning at breakfast with the whole family there, Rick announced that he and Evelyn were going away to work out their problems.  Jonathan graciously agreed to stay with Alex, and the very next day he and his nephew drove them to the airstrip, and bid them farewell, not knowing how long they would be gone.

With the two of them gone, the house was a much quieter, and for a while both Alex and Jonathan enjoyed eachother’s company.  Then as the days turned into weeks and the weeks into a month, Jonathan at least, began to wonder if they were ever coming back.  As he was beginning to worry he got a letter in the mail from Switzerland.  Evelyn wrote and told him that she and Rick were sorry for causing so much hate in their lives, and that they had resolved the issue’s which had plagued them while at home.  She also told him the date they would be arriving, and after finishing the letter, Jonathan went to find Alex so they could spend the day cleaning up.  His Sister and Rick were due home tommorow, and they didn’t have any time to waste.

CHAPTER 1: A Peaceful yet Revealing Return

Peering out a large window, one of several, Alex watched as twin propeller planes landed and took off.  He and his Uncle John were at a small airstrip just on the northern side of London, waiting for his parents to return from their month and a half long vacation in Switzerland.  Alex had enjoyed spending time alone with his Uncle, who was one of his very best friends, but as the weeks moved on, he realized how much he really missed having his parents there with him.

With Jonathan around he didn’t have to go to bed early, didn’t have to put a napkin in his lap when they ate their meals, and pretty much could do what he wanted as long as he did all of his school work, which for him was easy, with the exception of math.  All of that had been fun for the first few weeks, but as time drew on he really missed his mum nagging him about keeping his room clean, or his dad telling him to pick up his toys in the parlor.  For the past week and a half, Alex had been sneaking into their room to sleep on their bed, just so he could feel close to them, and though he would never ever tell any of his best buddies, who all thought it was great for him to have his parents away, Alex hoped that they wouldn’t leave like this again, or at least not for as long a time.

Another plane landed, and Alex sighed when the flight which was announced was not the one his parent’s were on.  Resigned to the fact that they would have to wait for an eternity before their arrival, he left the window and walked the few feet to where his Uncle John sat sleeping on a hard wooden bench.  “When did you say they were going to be home?”

Jonathan lifted his head from the back of the bench, and winced when he realized how stiff his neck was.  He lifted his left arm, and looked at the watch Evelyn had given him nearly five years ago.  “Should be any time now.  Why don’t  you and I play a game of cards while we wait,” suggested Jonathan.  He frowned when Alex shook his head and walked away.  He knew how much his nephew had missed his parents, and had decided that when they returned he would tell them that staying away from Alex for almost two months wasn’t fair to the boy.  Then he remembered how often and how intense some of their arguments had gotten before they had gone away, and decided that he shouldn’t say anything.  Both of them had been extremely busy with work, and since Evelyn had excepted the job at the museum as Assistant Curator, she had been spending alot of time at the British Museum.  They deserved their time alone, but Jonathan hoped that for Alex’s sake the next time it would be more of a family vacation than just the two of them.

The speakers in the small building where he, his nephew, and several other people were waiting crackled then a man’s voice came on announcing the flight his sister and Rick were on.  He stood up as Alex ran for the door leading out to the airstrip and after grabbing his coat, he ran after his young nephew, catching up to him at the fence that stopped Alex from going out to wait for the approaching plane.

Alex watched as the plane touched down.  He shifted from one foot to the other, anxious to see his parents.  He was joined by his uncle and the other people waiting for their loved one’s to disembark from the plane.  When the plane came to a stop, a few service attendants pushed a large portable staircase to the right side of the plane, and once it was in place the door to the plane opened and the first person appeared at the entrance.  Alex frowned when he realized it wasn’t his mum or his dad.  More people started to get off of the plane, but not his parents.  He turned to look at his uncle.   “Maybe they didn’t come back,”  he said fighting off the urge to start crying.  He saw his uncle smile and looked again at the plane, seeing his mum appear at the entrance.  “MUM,”  he yelled as he waved his arms.  As soon as the gate was opened, Alex was gone, running as fast as he could to get to his mum.

Evelyn stepped to the side of the stairs, and knelt down opening her arms as Alex ran into them.  She hugged him tightly to her kissing the top of his head.  “I’ve missed you so much,”  she said as she felt tears streaming down her face.  She hadn’t realized how much she had missed him, until this moment.

“I really really missed you mum, don’t go away for so long the next time,”  Alex said as he lifted his cheek from her chest.  When she kissed his cheeks he didn’t mind.

“I promise we wont go away for this long, not for a while at least, or we will take you and Jonathan with us,”  she said as Alex once gain placed his left cheek against her chest, hugging her as tight as he could.    Evelyn felt a strong hand against her left shoulder, and gave her son one last squeeze.  “Why don’t you give your father a hug,”  she said, feeling her legs cramp up in the position she was in.

Rick stepped away from his wife, and when Alex stood up, and after helping Evie to her feet, he lifted his son up over his head, and settled him on his shoulders.  Once Alex was secure, he reached out and took his wife’s left hand.  “So how was your time with Jonathan?”  he asked as he felt Alexs arms resting on top of his head.

“It was fun, but I missed having you, and mum around telling me what to do,”  he admitted.  When he was asked about his room, he assured both of them that it was clean, which until yesterday it had been a wreck.  At the fence, Alex was put back down on his feet, and before his dad could get away he hugged him around his waste, which was as high as he could reach.  When Rick knelt down he got a better hug, and even kissed him before asking the inevitable question.  “Did you and mum get me anything?”

At that Rick chuckled.  “I think we may have gotten you a present, but you will have to wait until we get everything unpacked, because I don’t remember which trunk or suitcase we put it in,”  he said as he stood back up.

Evelyn, who was standing close by talking to Jonathan, telling him about their marvelous vacation, told him exactly which trunk it was in, but agreed that they would have to wait until they got home before Alex could get his present.

Sitting on a high back cloth chair, Evelyn looked up from reading the evening paper, watching as Rick, and Jonathan helped Alex put together his new present.  They had gotten him his first electric train set, something he had been after them to get for him since he had seen one a toy store here in London.  The track was itself took up a good bit of space, and came complete with an entire town for it to run through.  The guys were gluing down the buildings onto a large piece of treated board which was painted like city streets.

Their time in Switzerland had done both of them a world of good.  There, without the hassles of everyday life, and the demands of their jobs, they really had time to talk about all the things they were arguing about, mostly about silly things, and came to realize that most of their problems were just due to the lack of time they had with one another.  Things were going to change, and Rick had decided that he was going to do less at work, and more work from home, as he had promised himself nearly two years ago after their adventure in Egypt.  Evelyn would still work at the museum, but wouldn’t work past five in the evening unless it was truly an emergency.  The Curator would have to start doing his part, and she knew that telling him that wasn’t going to make him any easier to work with.

“Mum come watch it’s ready to go now,”  Alex said, calling her out of thought.  Setting the paper aside, Evelyn walked over to her son, and sat down next to him,  watching as Rick made sure the train was properly settled on the tracks.

“Okay son, give it a go,”  he said.

Alex pushed a button on the control box, then took hold of a knob and slowly turned it.  The train, complete with several box cars, and a red caboose lurched slowly forward.  Then, as Alex turned the knob further to the right, it began to move a little faster.  When he pushed another button steam came out of the engine and the train was off.  “Isn’t this great?”  he asked as he watched it go through a tunnel.

“I think so,”  Evelyn said looking over at Rick, who was watching the train, just as intently as their son.

Jonathan stood up then.  “Well, I think I might go out for the night.  I need to go over to my Casino and see how things are running.  Alex take good care of that train,”  he said.

Rick also stood up, and walked over to his brother-in-law.  “Jonathan thank you for staying here with him,”  he said.

“Say nothing more O’Connell, but you do owe me one,”  he whispered, so Alex wouldn’t hear him.  He winked at Evie then headed for his part of the house to get ready for a night on his own, the first in several months.

Once Jonathan was gone, Rick realized that it was getting pretty late, at least for a boy who had school in the morning.  “Okay pal, I know this is exciting but you need to go get ready for bed.  As he had guessed Alex instantly protested.

“Ahh but we just got her running dad, and I have a whole town of people needing to get going on their vacations,”  he said, still letting his train run.

Rick walked over to his son, and knelt down.  “I know pal, but you don’t want to be falling asleep in school, and you have this train to play with tommorow and the next day,”  he said gently.

A sigh escaped his lips, then he shut his train down.  “Can we carry it up to my room?”

“I think if we did, it would take up your entire floor space, and besides we need to make sure all of the buildings are going to stay put before we try and move this thing, so for tonight at least, it needs to stay put,”  he said.  He watched as Alex’s shoulders slumped forward, and was glad that his son didn’t put up anymore arguments as he stood up and shuffled off toward the stairs.  “Your mum and me will be up to say goodnight in a few minutes.”

Once Alex was out of earshot Evelyn spoke.  “He sure was unhappy about that,”  she said, as Rick unplugged the battery from the track.

“I know, but you, and I both know how hard it is to get him up when he hasn’t gone to bed early enough, and he has this track for the rest of his life,”  he pointed out as he stood up, looking at her as she drew closer to him.   “Do you have any idea how beautiful you are Mrs. O’Connell?”  he asked as he reached out and gently gathered her into his arms.  When he felt her head shake he held her out, then leaned his head forward, taking her lips in a warm inviting kiss.  When they parted, and he looked at her, he found her eyes closed for a moment before they opened.  “Lets get him settled for the night,”  he said, knowing what both of them needed.

Once upstairs, their thoughts turned toward the needs of their son.  Evelyn tucked his heavy quilts around his body before giving him a kiss goodnight.  “Sleep well, have sweet dreams,”  she said.

“I will.  Dad will you stay here and we can read The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe?”

Rick was about to leave with Evelyn, but stopped when his son requested that he stay.  It had been a long time since Alex asked him to share a story, and after giving Evie a quick kiss, he returned to his bedside.  “I figured you would have finished it,”  he said, remembering that they were midway through when Evelyn and he began having problems, which ended their story time.

“I waited for you and mum to get back from vacation and to act like you usually do.”

Not an emotional man, at least in public, Rick felt his throat tighten.  “Okay, so where were we?”  he asked as he settled in bed beside his son, ready to share the adventures in Narnia with him.  Alex turned to the page they had last read, and Rick took the book and began.

~*~

Just down the hall from Alex’s room, Evelyn lay in bed thinking about their vacation.  Going to Switzerland had been Rick’s idea, hers of coarse had been Egypt.  The mountain side town they stayed in was so beautiful, and the people there were friendly.  She and Rick had stayed in a private cabin which over looked a small valley.  They spent several days hiking up the mountain, having picnics there, as well as talking about anything and everything.  Evelyn recalled one of their conversations vividly.  They had been talking about Alex, and possibly moving him to the new school, which taught both boys and girls.  His best friend Megan already attended that school, and Alex had been begging them to let him go as well.  Somehow the subject had changed, and Rick surprised her when he asked her if she ever thought about having other children

~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~
“Sometimes,”  she said as she looked down at the red wool blanket they were sitting on.  She thought back to the time when Alex was seven, and she had thought she was pregnant.  Then she missed three of her cycles, and tried to convince herself that she wasn’t going to have a baby.  For what ever reason, her negative thoughts, or her body, she began to bleed heavily one night while Rick and Alex were away on their camping trip.  Jonathan rushed her to the hospital and the doctors there told her she was miscarrying.
“I know we lost the chance that one time, but maybe we won’t this time.  Rick watched as her eyes met his.  He saw the sadness in them as well as  the fear.  “Hey,”  he said as he reached out and pulled her so that he could hold onto her.  “If we did decide, this time I would be there for you, even when you have the baby, and I could make sure that the Doctors paid more attention,”  he said, remembering the horror story she told him about Alex’s birth.
There was more to it than the memory of Alex’s birth, or the memory of the child which would now be nearly three years old.  Both of them had agreed that with their active life style, with all the trips they took to Egypt to go on digs, and to other parts of the world, that having more children wouldn’t be fair to Alex.  They had taken precautions to prevent that from happening, and so far with the exception of the one time she miscarried those precautions had worked.  Then she thought about Rick.  He had missed the first fifteen months of Alex’s life, thanks to the Legion, and their lies, and maybe it was time to think about him, and not be so driven to find the next Hamunaptra, minus the curse of the mummy.  “Sometimes I look at him and wonder where the time went.  It seems like only days ago when he was small enough to hold with one arm, or when he liked for me to rock him to sleep.  You missed that time, and sometimes I find myself wondering what life would have been like had you not been taken by those horrid men,”  she said as she turned to face him.  “I could stop drinking my herbal tea, and you wouldn’t have to use any sort of protection,”  she said.  After that little was said.  Despite the evening chill of the mountain air, they made love with as little to take off as possible.
~~~***~~~***~~~***~~~

Evelyn wondered if she should tell Rick that she had already missed her first cycle, but decided not too.  She never missed a cycle, and was fairly certain, since the past two mornings when she had awakened feeling nauseated that she was carrying their second child.  Still she wanted to be certain that she was for sure going to have a baby, and the only way to do that was to wait until her Doctor could perform a test, something he wouldn’t be able to do yet for another month and a half.  Until then it would be her secret, and this time she hoped that it would be a secret she could share with both of her boys.

“He’s asleep,”  Rick said, as he walked into their room, finding his wife with a smile on her face.  “What?”  he asked as he walked over to their bed.

“I was just thinking how wonderful it is that the two of you still like to share story time before he goes to sleep,”  she said, hoping he would buy that.  His left brow raising up told her that he wasn’t going to buy it, and she decided that this time he should know, even if they risked another loss.  “I won’t know for sure until I can see the doctor, but we may have to redecorate the room across from Alex’s,”  she said, watching as his face lit up.

Rick sat down next to her.  “Really?”  Evelyn nodded her head, 99 percent sure that they were going to be adding another baby to their family.  “We need to keep this from Alex until the Doctor agrees with me, and that could be another two months before he is able to run a test to make certain that I’m correct,”  she added.  When Rick’s mouth came over hers, Evelyn wrapped her arms around his neck and shoulders and pulled him closer.  This was time for them to celebrate.  She felt his hands pulling up on her long nightgown, and knew she would have to get off of the bed to get it off.  Reluctantly she pulled her head back to break the kiss, then got off the bed, first to close the door then to undress.

Rick undressed as well, and turned off all but one bedside lamp, then walked over to where his wife was standing, and for a moment he just looked at her.  Evelyn was as beautiful to him today, as she was the first time he saw her in the prison in Cairo.  Her body called to his, and he could no longer just stand and stare at her.  Rick closed the space between them in one step, this time kissing her hard, dipping his tongue inside of her mouth, groaning as he felt her tongue meet his in a exotic dance.  He grasped her bottom with both of his hands, and bent down slightly pushing his very hard swollen flesh against her, rubbing against her as they continued to kiss.

Evie gasped as she felt his hard flesh rub up against her most private part, and felt her legs turning to jelly as he continued that delicious movement against her.  Moans fell from her lips as he stopped kissing her, and she felt one of his arms go behind her knees, and the other support her upper back as he lifted her up, cradling her against him as once again his kisses robbed her of her breath.  One moment she was still in his arms, the next she felt her back pressed against their bed as he moved his body above hers.  Evelyn opened her eyes, meeting his hungry gaze with her own a moment before she reached down to help guide him to her yearning entrance.

With his sensitive tip placed at her entrance, Rick moved slowly, pushing all the way into her.  He wrapped his arms under her arms, holding her close to him before he lifted his hips, gasping as her inner walls grasped ahold of him, as if to keep him from leaving their warm depths.  “Evie,”  he said a moment before he kissed her already swollen lips.

His slow movements in and out of her drove the breath from her.  Evelyn gasped each time he moved away and each time he pushed back inside of her.  Her eyes were closed, but opened wide when she felt his teeth graze the nipple of her left breast.  In turn she ran her fingers down his back, rubbing her long nails in circles as she heard him once again moan her name over and over.  His slow movements began to change to faster more demanding thrusts, and his lips once again met hers.  Their tongues resumed their erotic dance as their bodies drove together in strong demanding thrusts.  Then everything stopped when they heard something neither of them had ever expected.

“Mum?”  Alex’s questioning voice asked.

Quickly, and as dignified as he could Rick pulled out of his wife stifling both of their moans by his kiss.  Again they heard Alex call out for Evelyn, a moment before he told them that he had gotten sick.

“Alex, I’ll be right there baby, can you go run a bath?”  she asked keeping her eyes shut, wondering what he must be thinking.

Alex turned around and walked out of their room, not sure of what he had just seen.  All he really knew is that his stomach felt horrible, and that the taste of vomit was still on his tongue.

As soon as he was gone, Rick rested his forehead against his wife’s.  “I guess we get to tell him about the bird and the bees?”  he asked.

Evelyn hugged him.  “I don’t think he will ask about it tonight, and we need to go take care of him,”  she said, wondering how life would be with two children.

Rick moved off of her, and went to the bathroom.  He wet a washcloth with warm water and came back to where his wife was still laying in bed, and settled next to her wiping the perspiration from her chest before giving the cloth to her so she could take care of the more feminine area of her body.

~*~

Settled in a warm tub of bath water, feeling absolutely horrible, Alex fought off the sleep which was trying to overcome his body.  His mum’s strong hand against his back was the only think keeping him sitting up as she rinsed him off.  “Up you go,”  she whispered as she reached out with both hands holding just under his arms as she helped him stand up.    Alex nearly tripped over the side of the bathtub,  but she kept ahold of him, and a moment later his feet were on the soft bath mat he had forgotten to put down when he got in.  “I feel so bad,”  he mumbled as she began drying him off.

“We’ll get you into bed, then you will feel better after a goodnights sleep,”  Evelyn reassured him as she led him into his room.  Rick was just putting the clean quilts on his bed when they arrived, and seeing that she had a handle on thinks he went downstairs to get the syrup she had asked for.  Whenever any of them got sick she would give them a teaspoon of this very sweet medicine, that she had imported from Egypt, and that usually helped their tummy feel better.  As he walked downstairs, Rick again wondered how they were going to explain what Alex had seen.  Tonight he was too sick to really ask about it, and Rick kind of hoped he would forgot about it all together, but he knew his son, and knew that likely in the morning he and Evelyn were going to have a great deal to explain.

Once Alex was in a clean pair of long flannel pajamas, Evelyn helped him into bed, then settled next to him gathering him into her arms while they waited for Rick to come with the medicinal Syrup.  When he arrived she gently roused Alex who stayed awake only long enough to take the medicine before he rolled away from her on his left side ready to sleep.  Carefully, Evelyn got up from his bed and pulled his covers over him.  “He should sleep through the night,”  she whispered as they walked out of his room, hand in hand.

“And we need to behave,”  came Rick’s reply as she nodded her head.  For tonight, at least, their celebration would have to be put on hold, as Alex’s needs took priority.  In their room, Evelyn straightened up the covers, then climbed into bed scooting over until her left cheek was resting against Rick’s bare chest.

“So how do we explain tonight?”  Rick asked as he rested his hand against her bottom.

“We start by answering his questions, I think anymore than that might embarrass him.  If we need to we will explain why we make love, but I think maybe it might be easier if he heard it from you.  Don’t worry Rick, you will know what to say when he asks,”  she said, before she shut her eyes, confident that he could handle things if he needed to, alone.

For a long while after she went to sleep, Rick thought about what he would say to his son, then decided that he shouldn’t worry, he would just do what she said and answer his questions to the best of his ability.  Softly he whispered, “and if we have a girl you get to explain it to her.”  After that he also went to sleep, and for the rest of the night there were no more interruptions.
