It was so exciting to be here, and despite her brother’s grumbles, Evelyn Carnahan loved Cairo, and Egypt. They had only been here a few days, and it wasn’t a long trip, but her father and mother had brought them along this dig, along with their Nanny, who was taking care of them. Right now, Jonathan was stuck with her. He loved her, really he did, but he wanted to be alone, and this just was not fun having to watch over his 10 year old sister.
“Jonathan, you are going to fast.” He was going fast, he was a 15 year old on a mission, which was to find a way to tease his baby sister. Evelyn who wore a little dress, and dress shoes, did her best to keep up with him, but he kept getting further and further away from her. She hated to run, but she was forced to do so, and when she caught up to him, she grabbed his hand.
“Evy let go.” She did, hurt.
“You don’t want to be with me do you,” she accused.
“Evy look, I’m just bored, come on now.” He saw a rat scuttle by, and he found his chance to really get her good. Jonathan caught one by the tail and held it up, and it had the desired effect. Evelyn screamed bloody murder, and turned ,running as fast as she could down the busy streets. Jonathan nearly fell on the street laughing, then, when he caught his breath, he realized she was gone, and sobered.
“Evelyn come back it was just a joke.” Jonathan ran down the street, and after five minutes of not being able to find her he knew he was in trouble. As he walked back toward their home, he felt simply awful. He had to find her, he was supposed to be looking out for her. What would his mum, or dad think about this. He knew that his dad would ground him for being so careless. With that in mind he decided he would not return without her.
In an unfamiliar alley, Evelyn hid behind some old baskets crying. Sometimes she wish she were an only child, because lately all Jonathan seemed to do was to want to pick on her, and that was getting old fast. She heard fast running feet coming her way, and quieted, very afraid. Someone stopped, looking around, then whoever it was came behind the baskets and sat next to her for a moment not noticing her. Then the long haired boy looked at her. She looked like she was about to scream, so the boy put a hand over her mouth.
“Shhh, there are real bad men after me, so you have to be quiet can you do that?” She nodded, and he took his hand away looking out for the bad men he had spoken of. Evelyn looked him over. He was skinny, maybe to skinny, and he looked like he was about Jonathan’s age. Her thoughts were interrupted by angry shouts heading their way. She closed her eyes and hid her face in her hands.
“He has to be here someplace start looking around the mess here,” One guy said. The boy leaned in and whispered in her ear.
“We are going to have to run,” he said.
“I’ll stay here,” she said defiantly, not needing this boys help. She could take care of herself.
“Listen these guys will take you back to the orphanage and you really don’t want to go there. Grab onto my back now!” Frightened by what he had just told her, Evelyn did what he said, and when the ones who were there to hurt them had their back turned, they were off, moving very fast, faster she thought than even Jonathan could run. She heard shouts in back of them, and she hung on for dear life. It seemed like forever before they stopped, and when she was set down they were near the port.
“So are you on your own,” the boy asked doubting that she was.
“Yes, I’m going to run away into the desert, she told him,” When he laughed she got her feelings hurt even more and ran, but this guy didn’t let her get very far.
“Hey I’m sorry, you just don’t look all that prepared for the desert is all.” Evelyn sniffed.
“What would I need?” she asked. He led her over to some crates that they could hid behind, and once they were safe, he turned to her and asked her for her name. She hesitated.
“Okay so your shy, If I tell you my name will you tell me yours?” For a moment it didn’t look like she would, but then slowly she nodded her head
“My name is Rick.” She smiled
“I’m Evelyn,” she said softly. He felt bad for her, knowing she was out of place, and also felt a need to protect her, so he put his coat out and she sat down.
“Why do you want to go into the desert?”
“My mum is from there, well far away, and I want to go where he people are.” She had a British accent so the fact that her mother was an Egyptian surprised him to say the least.
“Do you know how big the desert is?” Rick asked her.
“Very big, but I am part Egyptian so I should be able to find my way,” she said crossing her arms daring him to laugh or tell her different. He didn’t do any of the above.
“Evelyn do you have parents who love you?” She thought a moment, then nodded.
“If I were you I would go home.” She started to cry again, and Rick looked around a little worried tha someone would find them.
“Don’t cry please.” He was uncomfortable and rubbed her back, and in a moment she was better.
“I just want adventure,” she told him honestly.
“I’ll tell you what, if you promise to let me take you home tonight, then I’ll take you on an adventure.” This she agreed too, and after helping her to hir feet he took her to the port
Unable to find Evelyn anyplace, Jonathan returned home finding, his mum and Nanny fixing dinner. When Mariah Carnahan looked up and only found Jonathan there she paled.
“Where is Evy,” his mom asked frightened
“She ran off, I was mean to her and she ran off.” He ran out of the kitchen and up stairs to his room.
“Amelia, go find Howard.” Mariah ran upstairs and found Jonathan packing.
“Jonathan stop please.” He sat on his bed looking defeated.
“I was just so bothered by having to watch her, and I played a mean joke on her. I am a terrible brother.,” he admitted.
“No you are a very good brother, and we will talk more, but we need to find her.” Jonathan nodded and as they headed downstairs Howard came in not happy with his son, but there would be time for talking to him later.
“Can you take us where you last saw her? Howard asked his son.
“Yes, it was at the market.” They all ran out the door.
On the ship, Rick and Evelyn hid in the cargo bin for a little bit, then he seemed to know when they could go up, and they were now on the top deck.
“Those are the Pyramids of Giza,” She pointed out to him. Rick already knew this, but humored her and listened to her.
“Oh look camels.” She was excited and it made him laugh a little.
“Don’t laugh at me,” she said in all seriousness He stopped
“Sorry,” he said. She looked back out over the River and then they sat down.
“Your an orphan?” she asked.
“Not anymore. I’m going to go away.” She frowned
“All alone?” He nodded.
“I want to see the world beyond Egypt.” Evelyn wasn’t sure she understood this guy. He wanted to leave a place as wonderful as Egypt. This was part her home, but she reasoned that maybe the mean men had allot to do with him wanting to leave, and left it at that.
“Are you hungry?” Rick asked her. She nodded, and he led her back into the cargo bay.
“Stay here.” She nodded and he left. It was scary down here all alone, and Evy wished that Rick would hurry up and come back. It was several minutes later that he brought two bowls of soup and some bread.
“How did you get his food,” He told her how, and she was mortified.
“But its wrong to steel.” He sighed.
“Then we will go hungry.” He stood up ready to take the food away, and she stopped him
“I suppose this once, but please don’t tell on me,” she said. He agreed, and after they ate they both took a little nap where they were, with Rick staying semi awake in case trouble came their way.
Night fell over the city of Cairo, and Howard had the authorities combing the city for his daughter. At home Jonathan had not said a word feeling terrible that Evy was lost on his count. Now he had made a decision. He would have to find her. With that in mind he put on his coat and snuck out the window going down the trellis. When he hit ground, he had to crawl past some of the windows, and when he was home free, he ran as fast as he could to the Market to find his baby sister.
After their boat ride, which got back when it was dark, Rick took Evelyn back to the market noticing all the authorities were out.
“You should...” Evelyn heard a familiar voice calling her name, and turned to see Jonathan way off in the distance.
“Thats my big brother.” Rick nodded.
“I wish I could go with you.”
“You’ll find adventure one day,” He said. He gave her a kiss on her head and took off, and Evelyn ran to her brother and hugged him tight.
“Oh thank the gods your safe.”
“Of coarse I am,” she said.
“Where have you been?” he asked as they headed for the house.
“Just on an adventure,” and thats all she would say.
Years later Evelyn was back in Cairo with her brother, a few years after the loss of their parents. She had just been through an ordeal that would take a long time to put in the past, and now she lay sleeping next to her new husband, smiling. When she first saw O’Connell in the jail, she felt that she knew him, but then dismissed it . He was rude and discusting. Then the events that unfolded brought them together in love, and the first time he kissed her on her head, they both remembered a yesterday long since past when a little girl and a young boy shared their first adventure together, and now that young boy was a fine man, the man that she loved. His arm snaked around her and he pulled her close. He kissed her on he forehead and then her lips.
“What were you thinking about?”
“Just the first time we met.” He smiled and kissed her again. It amazed him that the fates or gods had bought them together again, but then again, maybe it wasn’t so amazing. She stole his heart the first tme he saw her, and though the years away had made him forget, it was the first time he kissed her in the jail sell, that the memorys started to come back. Now it had come full circle, and he would do everything in his power to keep her safe.
Note: I just had to write it. Its a little goofy, but I’m in a goofy mood.
