THE CONVERSATION

Once the Mejai left everyone went back to their camp. Johnothan fell asleep right away. Evie sat quietly on her bed made of blankets and Rick sat across from her poking the fire with a stick.

"So you want to take a sip?" Rick said taking a sip from the whiskey bottle.

"I don't drink Mr. O'Connell."

He shrugged and sat the bottle down.

"Evelyn I've been thinking, since you're stubborn and won't listen when I tell you to stay, I think it's time that you learn how to fight."

"That's a kind offering Mr. O'Connell but I can take care of my self."

"Really? That's why I saw you laying on the ground playing dead."

"I was not, the sound of the gun shot startled me and I fell backwards."

"Sure Evelyn, whatever you say."

Evelyn sat in silence for a while as did Rick. Finally one of them spoke.

"Evelyn is there more to why you want to find this book so badly?"

"Yes, my Parents wanted to find it before they died."

"Johnothan said something about them being top archeologist or something?"

"They were."

"Did they die when they were on a dig?"

"No. They were heading to America, I was twelve when they died, leaving me being taken care of by Johnothan."

"What happened?"

"They died when the Titanic sank. They were on the ship and there wasn't enough life boats, and I know what you're thinking. Even though they were rich they weren't that rich to be in first class. They were in second class but it was too."

Rick looked at her and saw tears forming in her eyes. He felt bad for bringing it up and wanted to comfort her. He moved closer to her and put his hand on her shoulder. She looked at him then hugged him. He wrapped his arms around her and let her softly cry. Evie looked up at him and smiled. He smiled back.

She picked up the bottle and took a sip from it, "I think I'll take that offer, now."

Rick let her go with out any rush, then stood up. Evie was never this open with anyone and would never allow it especially with a man she hardly knew but this time she was going to let it slide. She sat the bottle down then took his hand.
