VAN HELSING 3: SOUL HUNTERS

(I still don't own Van Helsing. Please read and review!)

Chapter 4: A torn family.

It had only been ten days since the hunters left Rome, and already Isabelle seemed to be unbearable. Everyone tried their best to put up with her, but it seemed impossible. She complained about how tired she was every few miles, stopped frequently to eat, and went the slowest due to her horse, which everyone knew was being overburdened.

The only one who actually put up with her actions was Antonio. He always acted kind and sweet to her. Whenever she needed something done, he always did it for her. It seemed he became her little puppet.

Victoria had almost the opposite feelings towards the new companion. She felt so...so.... What's that feeling called? she thought one time when the group stopped to make camp. She never experienced it before because she never had a reason to. It was then it came into her head.

Jealousy.

Victoria began to blush softly. She was jealous! Of a cowardly, bossy, and fussy girl! So what if she had Antonio in the palm of her hand? She could have him! He wasn't much to Victoria anyway. Victoria kept telling herself this, but it didn't work. This was a tough case of jealousy that wouldn't be solved easily.

The thought still burdened her when they rode off. Gabriel noticed it soon and went to talk to her.

"Are you alright? You seem off." he said.

Victoria turned to him, looking like she had just been waking from a trance. "I'm sorry?"

"Are you well?"

"I'm fine." she said, surprised the question was asked.

"You seem troubled." Gabriel said, sensing something was wrong.

"Gabriel, I'm alright, I assure you." she said, now getting a little annoyed.

"Are you sure?"

Victoria rolled her eyes. "What are you? My mother?" she asked.

Gabriel then stopped short and turned to the hill they were riding by. Victoria sensed trouble. "What is it?" she asked.

"I don't know. I only sense a lot of evil." was Gabriel's reply. Victoria tensed. She gripped the handle of one of her swords, her eyes darting back and forth. She turned to the others, who had stopped when they saw where Victoria's hand gripped.

"Brace yourself," she said. "We may not be alone."

They all took warning, except for Isabelle, who looked at everyone with confusion. "Whatever do you mean?" she asked.

Anna turned to her. "She means we may get in a fight. So if I were you, I would get a weapon." she spoke harshly. Victoria smiled, happy to see that she and Anna shared views on Isabelle.

Sure enough, Isabelle didn't have anything. Victoria rolled her eyes and handed her a knife. "Don't kill yourself." she said. She knew that s simple knife wouldn't do much, but it would have to do for now.

It didn't take long to see something coming down the hill. It appeared to be weak and alone. It walked like at any moment its knees would give out on it. Everyone seemed to be relieved slightly, but Gabriel's and Victoria's eyes soon widened with shock. The figure wasn't a monster at all, but a woman. She looked up at them with weariness, and soon fear.

"M-Mom?" Victoria couldn't believe her eyes. Her mother appeared to have been running for days. The coat she wore was ripped and torn, like a wolf had gotten at it. Her hair was wild and messy. Her once soft, bright eyes had lost their softness.

"Gabriel! Victoria!" her mother cried. Victoria dropped from her horse to snatch her mother in an embrace.

"What are you doing here? Where's Father and Collin?" she asked. Upon saying that, her mother let go of her.

"You're not one of them, are you?" she asked. She began to back away slowly.

Victoria turned to the others, but they seemed just as lost as she. "What do you mean?" But before her question was answered, a large, black sphere whirred past her head. Her mother then left her presence and tried to run away, but exhaustion caught with her and she crumbled to the ground.

No one could help her, for they were too shocked to see who else came down the hill.

"What th-" was all Victoria could say before she got punched in the face, causing her to fall to the ground.

"Collin?" she questioned. A close look revealed that this boy wasn't her brother, but a look-alike. His brown eyes were now a glowing yellow, giving him away. Whatever that thing was, it wasn't her brother.

It didn't take long to get up off the ground and retaliate on the attack. However, "Collin" was a lot tougher than what Victoria thought. He tackled her and brought back on the ground hard. His hands gripped her throat. He was determined to force the life out Victoria.

The girl's eyesight began to blur and her head began to spin. The harder she tried to breathe, the harder the look-alike choked her. "Gabriel?! I need some help!" she cried out. She turned her head enough to see Gabriel fight another look-alike. "Dad?"

Gabriel seemed to be at an even match with his opponent. Whatever move one made, the other evaded. Finally, Gabriel pulled out his revolver and pulled the trigger. The evil creature fell to the ground, lifeless. Gabriel watched as the monster seemed to dissolve into nothing. Collin's double saw his partner dissolve, and he soon dashed off, leaving a gasping Victoria on the ground. She gripped her shoulder tightly, feeling pain race through it.

"Your brother and father had their souls taken, and then they were replaced by those...things!" their mother shouted as she ran to them. "I've been running from them for weeks." she said.

Gabriel ran to his sister and helped her to her feet. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine." she then turned to her mother. "Get to Rome. They'll help you." she said. It was the next morning when her mother listened and left them.

"Save your family. And whatever you learn, know that it was for your own good." her mother said before she left.

Her last words put a lot of questions in the two's heads. What do we have left to learn? We already know enough about ourselves!was the most common thought. Were they ever wrong.

Millie didn't know how long she had been unconscious, or how she got where she was. The only thing she did know was that she felt funny. She raised a hand to her throbbing head, only to stop to see her skin.

Her skin was bright and clear. She could see right through it!

I-I-I'm a ghost! she thought. She stood upright to see that she was in a cage. She gripped the bars and shook them hard.

"Hey! Somebody! LET ME OUT OF HERE!!" she screamed. After screaming for who knows how long, she sank to her knees and began to cry.
