FAMILY MATTERS
Based on the TV Show "Lost Girl"

Sometimes Kenzi forgot just how fast the Fae could be. One second the face-eater and the newbie were glaring daggers at each other, the next a blur of bodies and growls as they tried to respectively slam the other into the brick and cement of the surrounding area. As startling as the sudden display was, however, apparently the face-eater's pal had forgotten such a simple fact also.

Realizing her arms were starting to feel circulation again and that the second attacker had shifed to watch the action, Kenzi took the opportunity presented and kicked upwards. The satisfying crunch of sharp heel on crotch was only muted by the scream of pain that erupted from her guard right into her ear. Before she could complain, however, the human found herself shoved forward, bracing herself against the car hood to keep from stumbling. Pulling out the knife wedged in the back of her boot (living with Bo insured she'd never go anywhere without it), she whirled around to face her captor.

"Ooh, and the human is armed. Come on, pal, just try it," she challenged, glaring at him. Kneeling on the ground in front of her, with hands covering his nether regions, the Fae looked like he'd rather do anything at that moment then tangle with an armed human. Of course, that didn't stop his eyes from going all black or his mouth stretching to an impossible length as he roared at her.

"Arrrgh!" Kenzi yelled back, jabbing the weapon in his direction, "See I can do it too."

The Fae growled in response, but apparently the shot to his balls was enough for him. Struggling to his feet, he roared once more at the girl before turning and stumbling off into the darkness.

"Yeah, that's what I thought," Kenzi muttered, turning around, "Oh shit."

The face-eater and the newbie were locked together near the alley entrance, each apparently trying to bury the other inside the wall. As Kenzi turned, the face-eater gained the advantage in the struggle, flipping the girl against the building's edge and eliciting a roar of pain from her. Gripping the knife tighter, Kenzi ran towards the pair to help.

"Hey, asshole!" she yelled, "Yeah, over here!"

The cry caught the Fae's attention. Snapping his head in Kenzi's direction, he let out a loud hiss at the approaching human. It was just the opening the newbie needed. Letting out a growl, she grabbed the front of the Face-eater's shirt, pulling him around to the other side of the building. Slamming him against the brick work a second time, she let go long enough to throw a punch. Even at a distance Kenzi could hear the crack as she hit. With a groan, the Face-eater went slack, sliding silently to the ground. Breathing heavily, the Fae woman let him drop before whirling around as her attention snapping to Kenzi.

"You alright?" she snarled, eyes bright yellow and sharp teeth barred in a look Kenzi had seen many times before, "Human, are you alright?"

"Ye-Lookout!" Kenzi's warning came to late as the face-eater launched from the ground towards the girl's back.

"Huh- oof!" the shifter almost went sprawling as the creature latched onto her, but managed to catch herself against the wall. Swinging her elbow back, she tried to shove in the him off only to have the face-eater grab her arm and push her face first into the wall. With a snarl, she tried to push back but the other Fae seemed to anticipate the move. Grabbing the back of her neck, he pulled her back, using her own momentum to throw her against the opposite wall. Leaping on top of her, he lifted his hand above his head. Kenzi's jaw dropped open as his nails extended into long, black claws. With a painfully loud screech, he raked the claws across the shifter's shoulder. The woman screamed.

"Kenzi!" A familiar voice shook the human out of her stupor. Glancing over her shoulder, Kenzi saw Bo, Trick, and a couple of the Dal's patrons running towards them.

"Bo," Kenzi responded, seeing the succubus start to slow, "Help her!"

Bo looked up in the direction Kenzi pointed. The woman from the bar was on the ground near the alley; hands enclosed around the encroaching wrist of a male Fae, with large black nail reaching for her throat. A dark stain was already beginning to sprea along the front of her shirt. Clenching her hands into fist, the succubus picked up speed racing past Kenzi towards the pair. Before she could reach them, however, the male Fae looked over his shoulder. Spotting her, he pulled away from the woman and turned to fully face her. Opening his mouth once more, he let out a low hiss before leaping upwards and grabbing onto the wall like Spiderman.

"What the?" Bo slowed to a stop, staring as the man climbed along the building, finally vanishing onto the roof. Looking back, she saw the Fae woman close her eyes and lean faintly against the wall.

"Hey, hey! Stay awake!" Bo exclaimed, running over and sinking to her knees beside the woman. The girl's arm was a ragged mess with three deep gashes stretching across it. The rest of her was in similar but at least not worse shape with cuts and holes torn in the shirt from her struggles with the creature. Behind her, Bo could hear the approach of her friends

"Is she alright?" Trick asked he and Kenzi came up behind her. Before Bo could respond, however, the woman's eyes snapped open and she let out a low growl, reaching over her to grab her wounded arm.

"Fine," she muttered gruffly, pushing away from Bo and struggling to rise to her feet. The moment she stood, however, she stumbled; Bo jumping up to catch her.

"Woah, easy there tiger," Kenzi said, making her own reach for the woman's other side, "You just went three rounds with Edward Scissorhand up there. What's your name anyway?"

"Kira," the woman gasped, pulling her hand away from her shoulder to look at the wound. Crimson stained her skin and the surrounding cloth. Grunting as she covered the wound again, she glanced at Kenzi and added, "Are you alright?"

"Pff," Kenzi scoffed, "I had it handled. Did you not see my bad-ass moves?"

"What I saw," Kira responded, eyes glazing in obvious pain, "Was you almost become ghoul food."

"We should get you inside" Trick jumped in, "And get that shoulder looked at."

Kira looked over at him, grimacing in a mixture of pain and frustrating. Taking in another deep breath, she closed her eyes and assessed the damage. Every inch of her told her to run, to get away but she knew she wouldn't get far. Not to mention the fact the human and her Fae now both had a solid hold on her. It would be easier to just play along.

"Of course," she responded when she opened them again.

"So you're from Germany?" Bo asked, turning to look at the newest shifter in town.

"Well, I work there," Kira replied, wincing as she shifted her shoulder slightly. The ghoul's claws had struck deeper then she'd admitted, though not nearly deep enough to request Lauren's help. Trick had managed to stop the bleeding, clean, and patch up the wound; leaving the fae woman now sitting at the bar in stained jeans and a black undershirt with her bare shoulder covered in gauze and the rags of her blouse laid across the table beside her, "But my family is originally from around this region."

"Trick said you were visiting them," said Bo, taking a sip of her beer (The bartender had given all three women another round on the house), "So, what is it a Light shifter from Germany does exactly?"

"Security mostly," Kira replied and, catching the look from Bo, added, "What else?"

Bo nodded, offering her a tight smile. Unwelcome images of Dyson, Ciara, and Dyson with Ciara ran through her mind. She resisted the urge to look over her shoulder at the wolf in question as he, Hale, and Kenzi chatted over by the pool table. Kenzi had jumped at the chance to brag to Hale on what he'd missed the second the two detectives entered the pub.

"Yeah," she responded cheerfully, trying to stem of her longings, "Your, uh, kind seems to do really well in that area. So is the company you work for run by your, um, king?"

Kira snorted.

"Noo," she replied, taking a swig of her beer, "God no. The company's just a job."

"I'm sorry, I thought shifters worked with, er, for packs," Bo said, finally glancing over at Dyson, "I mean, I know some don't...I'm sorry, are these questions too personal?"

"It's fine," the female shifter squirmed uncomfortably in her seat, "I guess technically my dad's feality passed to me but..." she looked up at Bo, cracking a half-smirk, "I just never bothered to swear in."

"Oh, so you're a rebel?" Bo teased, deciding she was starting to like the young woman. Despite (or maybe because of) her similarities to Dyson she was finding Kira an effective distraction from the wolf-that-shouldn't-be-named. Not to mention, the fae appeared to be more talkative about her kind then the detective ever had been.

Kira shrugged, glancing over at Trick. The bartender had wandered over and joined Dyson, Hale, and Kenzi's conversation near the pool table once he'd checked the two woman were comfortable. She noted, with a smile, that wolf in the small group would occasionally pause to look in her direction. She allowed her eyes to briefly flash yellow at him when he did again before looking back at Bo

"I'm young," she finally replied, "You could say I haven't quite earned my Alpha status yet so I get away with more stuff. Besides, the company I work for has ties with some of the human noble families so the local government doesn't have much of a problem with me...lending a hand."

"I see," Bo said, not sure where to carry the conversation from there.

"So what about you?" Kira asked, picking up the slack, "What kind of work do they have a Light succubus engage in around here?"

"I'm not Light," Bo responded, "Or dark."

Kira nearly spit her beer back up. Pulling the glass from her face, she gasped, coughing as the liquid ran down the wrong pipe. Her head snapped in Bo's startled direction.

"You're the- You're the succubus?" the shifter exclaimed. Bo paused mid-reach, yanking her hand back protectively.

"So you have heard of me," Bo replied, giving her another tight smile.

"I think everyone in our world has heard of you," Kira said, coughing once more, "Sorry, I just never thought I'd...Sorry."

"Don't worry about it," Bo stopped her. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Kenzi coming towards them and Trick picking up glassware from around the bar, "Listen, I know this probably seems forward, but do you have a place to stay?"

To her surprise Kira stiffened.

"Thank you," she replied, not quite looking at Bo, "Yes, I booked a campsite in the woods."

"What? No, dude, we can totally set you up!" Kenzi exclaimed, appearing suddenly and slapping Kira in her un-injured shoulder. The shifter turned to glance at her in surprise.

"And besides," the human added, "You're injured and...there could be bears in those woods."

"Please," Bo agreed, "Kenzi's right and it would be the least we could do after you helped her out tonight."

Kira looked as if she stuck between a rock and a hard place. Reaching over, she picked up her glass and downed the last of her drink.

"I'm pretty sure there are bears there, Kenzi," she finally replied, sounding slightly amused by the thought, "But here, let me make you a deal. Let me sleep off this," she paused to examine her glass, "Inevitable hangover I'm going to have in a more tolerable form and I," she lifted a finger to stop Kenzi's interruption, "I promise I will be back here tomorrow and buy you a drink for your heroics."

Kenzi frowned, not liking the idea of the injured Fae alone in the forest. However, considering they just met the woman, there was little they could do to stop her. At least she was giving them a way to check on her.

"As long as you promise to be back here," Kenzi finally agreed in a threatening tone.

"Of course," Kira replied, sounding surprised "Besides, I would like to hear more about an unaligned life."

A.N.: Hello all, sorry about the slow update, this chapter ened up a bit longer then I anticipated.
